Patriots win their first bowl game in 19 years

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw a touchdown pass to receiver Julian Edelman on fourth down with less than a minute left to beat Ohio State 31-24 on Thursday night.

The game marked Brady’s third victory in his first 19 bowl games.

Brady completed 19 of 28 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns, including a touchdown to Edelman with 2:04 remaining in the first quarter.

Brady finished 20-of-23 for 266 yards and a touchdown.

Edelman caught four passes for 47 yards and the game-winning touchdown in the second quarter.

Edman had eight catches for 107 yards and touchdowns.

The Patriots (5-0, 3-0 Big Ten) defeated Penn State (4-3, 2-2) 24-16 in the Big Ten Championship Game last year.

Edell’s touchdown gave the Buckeyes a 7-0 lead at halftime.

The victory kept Ohio State from losing its second bowl game since the start of the 2007 season, when the Buckeye team was eliminated by the Kansas State Wildcats.

Ohio State quarterback Trace McSorley was sacked four times, and he threw an interception, his third of the season.

Ohio state is the second-worst team in bowl history.

In his first bowl season in 2009, McSomorley had only seven completions for 105 yards.

He threw two interceptions.

“The defense did a great job, getting the pressure on the quarterback and getting pressure on us,” McSorbes said.

“They came up with some big plays.”

Injuries to defensive end Nick O’Leary and safety Donta Anderson slowed the Bucaneers’ offense, but Edelman had two touchdowns and four catches for 66 yards.

“He’s one of the best cornerbacks in the country,” said defensive tackle Javon Walker, who caught a pass from Brady.

“I don’t think he had to throw a touchdown catch for us to be successful.

I think that’s what’s so special about him.

He’s a playmaker.

He has the size to be able to make plays down the field and he’s a great receiver.”

Edelman’s first career touchdown pass was the third-longest TD pass of his career, surpassing Randy Moss’ touchdown pass from 2007 against Wisconsin in the Orange Bowl.

“That was the game I was really looking forward to,” Edelman said.

The Buckeyes were led by a dominant performance by running back Ty Montgomery, who rushed for 146 yards and three touchdowns.

“There were times where he was really dominating,” McAfee said.

After the Bucoleers’ loss to Minnesota in the Fiesta Bowl, Edelman was asked if he thought he would be the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

“Not really,” he said.

The Patriots won for the third time in five games.

It was the first time since 2009 that the Patriots finished with at least 20 wins.

The last time they won in the bowl game was Nov. 3, 2007, when they beat Washington State 27-14.

Ohio State and Penn State have met in bowl games four times since the 2009 season.

Penn State won the 2009 Fiesta Bowl and Ohio State beat the Buckels in the 2010 Orange Bowl in their only meeting.

Ohio Stadium was in the middle of the snowstorm in 2010 when Penn State lost in the Cotton Bowl and the Patriots won that year’s Sugar Bowl in the Rose Bowl.
